"Firefly Dance" Original Mixed Media Painting On Canvas

In the fall my husband and I visited his childhood home in Illinois. On the drive he told me he had to show me the fireflies, and that I'd never seen anything like it before.

He was right. I'd seen a few fireflies growing up in Minnesota that blinked lazily through the dark forest. The fireflies in Illinois were very different.

They lit up the trees and flashed their lights furiously. There were thousands of them. For the first time the name "lightning bug" made sense. It looked like electricity was coursing through the dark woods.

We sat on the fence that enclosed the horse pasture and watched them blink for over an hour. I was completely in awe and decided "I have to paint the way this moment feels."
